Australia’s organ donation rates still far too low, despite modest rise.

MARK COLVIN, ABC PM PROGRAM:
“It looks like another step backwards for organ and tissue donation in Australia.
Despite years of government promises, the number of organ donors in Australia actually dropped in 2014.
The Organ and Tissue Authority is selling that as a one-off, preferring to emphasise a rise over the last five years of 50 per cent. But there are still shockingly long waiting lists for most organs, because the supply is nothing like enough for the demand.”
On the 10 February 2015 episode the ABC’s PM program, Bridget Brennan interviews Professor Jeremy Chapman, world-leading kidney transplant expert at Sydney’s Westmead Hospital and ShareLife Director, Brian Myerson. Brian says that Australia’s transplant operations should be double what they are now and progress is far too slow.
