Dr Rafael Matesanz

The rate of deceased organ and tissue donation has been shown to improve significantly in countries that follow a model close to the so-called ‘Spanish model’.

The Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with Sharelife and The University of Sydney presents a seminar with Dr. Matesanz as a chief guest to establish the basis of the requirements to implement the successful Spanish experience in Australia. Various experts in the field of medicine will meet to work together to find appropriate solutions to the barriers that may appear in the implementation of a system that more and more Australians could get benefit from. The seminar will be focused in New South Wales legislation but with the aim of being spread out all over the country as soon as possible.

Rafael Matesanz, MD PhD. Founder and Director of the Spanish National Transplant Organisation (ONT) since September 1989 which is an institution belonging to the Spanish Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, put in charge of developing the competencies related with provision and clinical utilization of organs, tissues and cells. After the creation of the ONT in 1989, Spain went from 14 donors per million population (pmp) to 35.1 donors pmp in 2005, and 35.3 in 2011. That means, to change from ranking in intermediate-low positions in donation rates in Europe, to have by large the highest rate not just in Europe, but also worldwide.

The aim of this event at the Cervantes Institute is to present the seminar to be held the next day, September 9, in the RPA Hospital in Sydney and in which Dr Matesanz will be a special guest as he is a reference worldwide regarding organ donation management.
